The precinct has been branded Maitland Metro to integrate the various development activities into a single coherent vision, underlining the developers’ intent to create a vibrant new residential and business district within the suburb. This coordinated approach will accelerate Maitland’s crucial linking role between the city centre and the eastern suburbs.
The centrality of Maitland, the ease of access onto main roads and the exceptional public transport in the precinct together make Maitland Metro a focal growth point of Cape Town and a remarkable place to live and work.
The upgraded public realm and urban spaces will incorporate a landscaping and greening component, a public plaza on Camp Road, and extensive greened pedestrian walkways. A park will be developed under the M5 flyover to activate this neglected space and host a variety of recreational activities such as netball, basketball, five-a-side soccer, and outdoor chess.
In partnership with the City of Cape Town, play infrastructure, street furniture and lighting will be incorporated to make these public spaces safe and usable, together with large feature trees for shade.
